R&D ACTIVITIES OF SYMBIOM

Symbiom has participated in many R&D projects on national or international level. The projects are mainly focused on development of new products based on mycorrhizal fungi and on new application modes. The participation suggests that our products and technologies offered are scientifically based and well proved.

ENHANCING OF LEGUMES GROWING IN EUROPE THROUGH SUSTAINABLE CROPPING FOR PROTEIN SUPPLY FOR FOOD AND FEED

FIRST LARGE-SCALE APPLICATION AND MARKET INTRODUCTION OF A NEW ORGANIC SUBSTRATE ENRICHED WITH BENEFICIAL FUNGI

The project is aimed to result in an enriched compost which is an ecologically feasible peatless substrate, providing an alternative for the peat-based substrates currently used in plant nurseries and soilless agriculture, considered ecologically undesirable. The substrate can also be used as organic amendment in intensive soil agriculture thanks to its bio-fertiliser, bio-pesticide and bio-stimulant effects. Its use contributes to the reduction of the inputs of environmentally damaging agrochemical pesticides. This project seeks being the first large-scale application of a natural biosubstrate, based in composted grapevine pruning residues and enriched with specific microorganisms (fungi) through a patented process.


BIOLOGICAL ADDITIVES OF IRRIGATION WATER FOR QUALITY ENHANCEMENT OF FOOD CROP

Amendment of irrigation water for cultivation of food crops enhances yield and quality (antioxidants, vitamines and essential elements content) and reduces chemical inputs. On the model of field and greenhouse grown vegetables bioadditives will be tested based on beneficial soil fungi and bacteria, bio-fertilizers, bioactive plant extracts, algae and cyanobacteria from surface water reservoairs treatment or digestate from biogas production.

 

TACR: MYCORRHIZAL PREPARATION FOR SUPRESSION OF DANGEROUS INVASIVE PLANT PATHOGENS

The project is aimed on formulation of two mycorrhizal preparations efficient in prevention of the plant root rots caused by Phytophthora pathogens. The composition of ectomycorrhizal preparation with the verified effects against Phytophthora in beech, oak and chestnut will be developed. Equally the composition of arbuscular mycorrhizal preparation efficient in the oil palm will be created.

DEVELOPMENT OF STRIGOLACTONE APPLICATION TECHNOLOGIES FOR THEIR AGROTECHNICAL USE

The project aim was to prepare a commercial bio-product with content of strigolactons (i.e. plant hormones) in a suitable form including the mixture with mycorrhizal inoculum and to deliver its optimal applications. The effects of bio-product on plants were verified at different soil nutrient levels (P affects both mycorrhizal development and strigolactone production).

ECO-FRIENDLY REVITALIZATION OF URBAN, FORESTRY AND FRUITCULTURE TREES

The project was focused on development of new pressure injection technology, which allows injecting solid products into the soil around trees and allows the injection of biological for the revitalization of urban trees in the countryside, forestry and horticulture.
Basic scientific research wasfocused on the verification of molecular biological methods for detection of beneficial mycorrhizal fungi in the roots of trees after injection.

RESEARCH AND APPLICATION OF BIOTECHNOLOGY ANTI-EROSION STABILIZATION IN THE RECLAMATION OF SLOPES CREATED BY INDUSTRIUAL ACTIVITIES

The project was focused on research and development of bio-preparation and application technology for anti-erosion treatment of slopes. Project resulted in a product TurfComp based on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi combined with fertilizing bio-additives which can be applied by hydroseeding technology to prevent slope erosion and to revegetate slopes of motorways or can be used for revitalization of sports greens and turfs.

RESEARCH AND APPLICATION OF COMPLEX BIOTECHNOLOGY OF ECOLOGICAL TREATMENT OF WOODY TREE SPECIES FOR PLANTING IN ECOSYSTEMS DISTURBED BY INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITIES

The project was focused on utilisation of beneficial microbial inoculation preparations based on symbiotic mycorrhizal fungi in combination with ecological bio-fertilizer and on development of three application modes and facilities to accomplish them for nursery, direct tree planting and treatment of mature trees by injection.

Results of the project: patent protection of the applicators. The new prototype of applicator for mature trees was designed. When compared with the first prototype from 2007 the new one is more powerful and is not depended on pressure bottles. Nowadays it is offered to customers as the SYMBIOM INJECT SYSTEM.
 

FP6: MICROMAIZE
MANAGEMENT OF PLANT-BENEFICIAL MICROBES TO BALANCE FERTILIZER INPUTS IN MAIZE MONOCULTURE

The objective of the project was to develop and validate integrated farming practices based on phytostimulation and bio-fertilization to enable a reduction of chemical fertilizer usage in a key European cropping system, maize monoculture. The project focused on synergistic consortia of plant beneficial microbes comprising the two PGPR Azospirillum (nitrogen fixation and modulation of plant hormonal balance) and Pseudomonas (phosphate solubilisation and phytohormone modulation), and the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Glomus.

The designed consortia were tested in many field trials under real conditions in several European countries and Mexico.

COMPLEX BIOTECHNOLOGY OF FRUIT CROP PRODUCTION

The projects were focused on obtaining biological material for the production of inoculum on the basis of ericoid mycorrhizal and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and selection of the most effective strains for application in selected crop species in target agroecosystems (arid areas) with emphasis on increasing the sustainability of production systems (organic approach) and a quality of produced crops.

Results of the project:

  • new products - Rhodovit (based on ericoid mycorrhizal fungi) and Symbivit ARID (based on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi adapted to arid conditions)
  • a manual for product application in the arid ecosystems
  • technological process of organic cultivation of blueberries or other fruit crops, using products based on mycorrhizal inoculum.
